These stories are as vile as anything Hollywood can dream up, all shining Biblical examples of human depravity.

Lot and His Daughters

Genesis 19:30-38

After God destroyed two bad cities, Lot and his two daughters lived in a cave. The daughters wanted babies, but they had no husbands, so they got their father drunk and made love with him. They named their sons Moab and Ammi, the father of the Ammonites.

Judah and His Daughter-in-Law

Genesis 38

Judah's son married Tamar, but he was a bad man so God killed him. By custom, Judah's other son was supposed to give Tamar a son. He refused, so God killed him, too.

Since Tamar still needed a son, she disguised herself as a hooker and made love with Judah. He was very angry when she was going to have a baby and he wanted to kill her, but changed his mind when he found out he was the father of his daughter-in-law's twin sons.

Ehud and Eglon

Judges 3:12-30

God had given the Children of Israel the Promised Land, but they forgot about God and so King Eglon conquered them. The Children of Israel asked God for help, who made Ehud their leader.

Ehud went to see Eglon and said, "I have a message from God for you."

He took out a sword and plunged it into Eglon's belly. The king was so fat that the handle sank in after the blade, which came out his back.

Ehud escaped while Eglon's guards thought he was going to the bathroom. He led the Children of Israel and beat Eglon's army.

Abimelech and the Millstone

Judges 9

Gideon, who defeated the Midianites, had many wives and seventy sons. He also had a girl friend in Shechem, who gave him a son named Abimelech.

After Gideon died, Abimelech murdered his seventy brothers and set himself up as king in Shechem. The people of Shechem revolted so he destroyed the city and burned one thousand men and women in a tower. Then he attacked another tower, where a woman dropped a millstone on his head and cracked his skull. He didn't want anyone to say a woman had killed him so he had his servant run him through with a sword.

The Most Sordid Tale in the Bible

Judges 19-21

In the days when there was no king, a man and his girl friend stayed overnight at another man's house on their way home from a trip. The neighbors pounded on the door, demanding to have gay relations with the owner's guest. The owner gave them his guest's girl friend instead. They raped and abused her all night long, leaving her dead on the doorstep in the morning.

Her boy friend cut her body into twelve pieces and sent one piece to each of the tribes of Israel. The tribes became very angry and attacked the tribe of the men who had killed the girl friend, killing all of them except for a few soldiers who escaped.

The other tribes became very sad because the soldiers needed wives and the tribes had promised God not to give them any wives. One group had not made the promise, so the tribes killed all of them except the virgin women. They sent the virgins dancing down the road so each soldier could grab himself a wife.

There was no king, and everybody did whatever they wanted.

The Dowry

I Samuel 18:20-30

Michal was King Saul's daughter and she wanted to marry David, but King Saul didn't like David. He wouldn't let David marry his daughter unless David gave him the man parts of 100 Philistines, hoping David would be killed, but David and his men killed 200 Philistines and gave their man parts to King Saul. The king had to let David marry his daughter, and then he really didn't like David.

Family Quarrel

II Samuel 13

King David's son Amnon liked his half-sister Tamar. His cousin Jonadab suggested that he ask Tamar to make him some food, and when she brought it to him, he raped her.

Tamar's full brother Absalom waited two years to get revenge. He asked his father King David to send Amnon to his sheep-shearing party, where Absalom had his men kill his half-brother while he was drunk.
