THE VATICAN

ROME

St. Paul Basilica looks better on the inside and there's some reason to believe the Apostle Paul is buried there.

Tiber River, with St. Andrew Castle at upper left.

Flavian Amphitheater, popularly known as the Roman Colosseum

Temple of Venus.

Constantine Arch.

Titus Arch.

Carving in Titus Arch depicting the Triumph (victory parade) after the conquest of Jerusalem (note the minora).

Ruins of the Roman Forum.

Italy's Tyrrhenian Sea (western) coast.

Stromboli, sounds like the name of a soup, but it's an active volcano located just north of Sicily.

SICILY

Because of senseless religious violence in Egypt, the cruise ship stopped at Sicily instead. The land tour route is marked in green on the map.

Messina Harbor.

Messina, Sicily. During World War II, the American General George S. Patton, Jr. raced the British General (later Field Marshal) Bernard Law Montgomery to this city (at least according to the 1970 movie starring George C. Scott, the best movie ever made), which was key for invading the Italian mainland only three kilometers away.

This view from Taormina shows how rugged is Sicily's east coast. No wonder Montgomery had a tough time advancing here.

Taormina, Sicily.

The Greek theater at Taormina.

NAPLES

Castle overlooking the harbor.

Naples.

Mt. Vesuvius.

Harbor pilot.

Pompeii
