Christian was born in Mecklenburg, Germany. According to his obituary in the Chilton Times, he married Anna Heuer in Germany and immigrated in the fall of 1865 with his wife, little daughter, father, and sister after a fourteen-week voyage. Anna was born in Schwerin, Mecklenburg, Germany. According to her obituary in the Chilton Times, she immigrated in 1860 and married Christian in 1861. According to the U.S. census, they were married in the early 1860s.
