Louise was born in Newbury near Weiman, Schwerin, Mecklenburg, Germany. According to her obituary in the Chilton Times, she and Charles had four sons and a daughter, they left for America on 3 September 1863, their daughter died during the trip, and they settled in Stockbridge, WI. According to their son Christian's citizenship documentation, the voyage lasted fourteen weeks and they arrived at New York on 10 January 1865, so they left Germany a year after the obituary says.

According to the 1880 census, Louise's brother, William Steinhagen, and his wife lived with her son Christian. The 1900 census lists Louise living in Christian's household.
