Martin was born in Freistadt, WI. After visiting relatives near Fremont, WI, he bought a farm in the Town of Wolf River in Winnebago County. Ida was born in Saxony, Germany and immigrated with family members to Fillmore, WI as a young girl. Martin would visit his parents in Freistadt, a three-day's journey when traveling with oxen, stopping for the night at farm houses on the way. This is most likely how he met Ida. They married and he brought her to the farm. They lived in a log house until they built a large ten-room house about 1893. After Martin died from stomach cancer, Ida kept house until her two youngest sons, Walter and Henoch, married. Then she had her own apartment on the farm with Walter. She died after suffering a stroke. |
