Wilhelm's parents were named Carl F. Langner and Anna Suzanna Kranz. His brother Johann Gottfried Langner came to America on board the Harzburg out of Bremen, arriving at New York on 4 May 1865. Gottfried was born in 1840, was a laborer, married Augusta F. Spielgelberg, and died in 1927.

Rosina was born in Schleswig, Holstein, Germany and lived in Silesia before coming to America.

Wilhelm and Rosina immigrated in 1893 with their son Carl and daughter Anna, joining another daughter, Dorothy, who already had come over with an aunt and lived in Menasha, WI. The family was quarantined onboard ship upon arrival in New York because there was a cholera epidemic where they came from in Germany. Wilhelm was a farmer near Winchester, WI where he held a mortgage on his own farm as of 1900. Carl still lived at home at that time.
