Martin Friedrich was born and baptized with the name Michael Friedrich Gottlieb Bruss in Kammin, Pomerania, Germany. He immigrated in 1839 with his parents, two brothers, and sister. Martin Friedrich bought eighty acres of government land on 23 November 1841 along Granville Road near Cedarburg, WI. There he began clearing trees to make some farmland, and built himself a loghouse.

Wilhelmina was born in Tribsow, Kammin, Pomerania. She immigrated in 1841 with her parents and siblings, coming straight to Milwaukee. According to her obituary in the Cedarburg News, she was survived by 71 grandchildren and 106 great grandchildren.
