Gerad and Marie came from Oldenburg, Germany. He was a farmer. With an infant daughter named Anna, they departed on board the Freihandel from Bremen and arrived at Baltimore on 14 September 1865. They settled in Mayville, WI where five more children were born.

Gerad purchased property on 26 December 1866, which is now located at the southwest corner of Bridge and School Streets in Mayville. He's listed in the 1870 U.S. Census as a cabinet maker and a U.S. citizen.

Gerad was killed when he fell from his wagon hauling a load of shingles from Iron Ridge to Mayville and a wheel ran over his head. He's buried in Mayville. His last daughter, Bertha, was born twenty-three days after his death. Marie traveled with her children to rural Leigh, NE in 1877, where she had relatives. She married a widower, Henry Englebart, in 1878 and became a stepmother to his children. Henry and Marie had two more children, Annie and Henry. She's buried in the cemetary of Christ Lutheran Church six miles south of Leigh.
