William was born in Freistadt, WI. He trained at the Lutheran seminary in Fort Wayne, IN to be a teacher. In 1859 he received his first call from Trinity Lutheran in Sheboygan, WI. Emilie was born in Apfelstedt, Germany and immigrated to America with the rest of her family. William and Emilie were married at Trinity by Rev. Daniel Stecker and lived in the 4th ward nearby her parents. William taught at the church until 1866, at which time the school was located at 916 New York Ave. School was held in the lower floor and the teacher lived upstairs. Then William served as the principal at the city school, and taught again at Trinity from 1872 to 1880.

After Emilie's death from giving birth to Emil, William accepted a call to St. Paul's Lutheran in Concordia, MO. He took his motherless children there, where he started teaching the higher parochial grades on 5 June 1881. He soon organized the Concordia band, directing and instructing it for many years afterward. He was also the church organist. He married Maria Bublitz on 17 October 1882.

William resigned his teaching position on 28 August 1904 because of failing health. According to his obituary in the local newspaper, The Concordian, he was survived by Maria, five children by his first marriage, three from the second, a sister, a half sister, two half brothers, and eleven grandchildren. Later, Maria lived with never-married daughters Mary and Amalia at 1503 N. 37th St., Milwaukee, WI until she died with a bladder tumor in 1957 at age 102.
