Eduard was born at 9:15 p.m. in a poor people's hospital in Meissen, Saxony, Germany. He was a first-born child and later had a sister.

His father apparently disowned him because he refused to enter the military. After studying at the Steeden proseminary to be a missionary, he departed from Bremen on board the Columbus with a group of seventeen other missionaries. He arrived in New York on 24 August 1866, and traveled to St. Louis where he graduated from Concordia Seminary in 1869. He was ordained and installed at Norborne, MO by Rev. F.J. Blitz. He and Lydia were married by Rev. J.J.F. Koestering in Altenburg, MO.

He was installed at Immanuel Lutheran in New Wells, MO on 19 February 1871. During his tenure there the congregation erected a frame building. He resigned in 1878 because of a throat ailment, and moved to nearby Altenburg where Lydia's parents lived.

Missouri synod founder and president, Dr. C.F.W. Walther, and Lydia's uncle by marriage, recommended Eduard to pastor Zion Lutheran in Sandy Creek, MO, which was in the vicinity of Horine Station and is located near present-day Hillsboro. He was installed there on 10 October 1879 by Rev. Christian Bock. He also served Immanuel Lutheran in Pevely and began conducting mission services in nearby Festus in August 1881. The Zion and Immanuel congregations contributed $35.75 toward buying him a horse, plus feed and a stable, so he could more easily travel to his fields of labor.

He was installed at St. Paul Lutheran in Brownstown, IN on 6 March 1887 by Rev. P.G. Polack. His son Paul, who later became a pastor, stayed in St. Louis at C.F.W. Walther's home during that man's final year of life. The congregation in Brownstown erected its present building during Eduard's time there. He resigned in 1897 due to failing health.

After officiating the marriage of his daughter Agnes to Rev. Arthur Wilk, his new son-in-law installed him as his replacement at St. Matthew Lutheran in Japan, MO on 11 September 1898. He was installed at Peace Lutheran in Rolla, MO on 20 May 1900 by Rev. William Schmidt. He was installed by Rev. Johann Roschke on 29 June 1902 at Stones Prairie, MO near Monett, where he also served a church in Pierce City. He resigned in 1905.

He was installed as pastor of the Fort Morgan area mission in September 1906 and lived at the corner of Sherman and 6th in Fort Morgan. Trinity Lutheran was formally organized as a congregration on 25 November 1906. The cornerstone of the first church building at Sherman and 7th was laid on 15 March 1908. Eduard died six days later of lung hemorrhage.
